Join Timothy Weber on August 11-12, 2023 to experience hand building and surface decoration techniques! In this clay workshop, students will create their work on August 11-12 and will meet again on August 19 from 9:30-11:30 to glaze their pieces under the instruction of Amy Smoot. Timothy says, “I am looking forward to coming back to the Kentuck Art Center to lead a two-day workshop after having served as the resident potter for 10 years from 1982 to 1992. Our hand-building workshop will introduce hand-building techniques (i.e. coil, pinch, slab, and drape) with an emphasis on surface, texture, and decoration. Not only will we do texture, sgraffito, and slip exercises, but we will also employ these techniques on our handbuilt pieces. We will explore what certain textures and designs do to enhance the forms we are working on.” There is a minimum of 4 participants and a maximum of 10. No refunds will be given once registration closes. The dates and times for this workshop are: August 11, 2023; 9-4 PM (lunch break on your own) August 12, 2023: 9-4 PM (lunch break on your own) August 19, 2023: 9:30-11:30 AM About Timothy Weber: A native of Boise, Weber received his first professional craft opportunity serving as an apprentice to potter Charles Counts in Rising Fawn, GA. After completing his apprenticeship in 1973, he enrolled in Troy State University in Alabama and, while there, helped develop a production pottery studio in Brundidge, AL. He graduated from Troy State with honors in 1976, earning a bachelor’s degree in studio art. After graduation, he served as an Alabama Council for the Arts resident artist for the city schools of Troy, Decatur, and Mobile. In 1982, Weber became resident potter at the Kentuck Art Center, located near Tuscaloosa, and he held that position for 10 years before moving to Nashville and joining the staff of the Tennessee Arts Commission. During his time in Nashville, Weber maintained a full-time, working studio and exhibited his work both regionally and nationally. Timothy Weber is a master potter and former director of visual arts, craft and media for the Tennessee Arts Commission. Weber currently is working from his studio in Nashville, TN. This workshop is sponsored in part by the Alabama State Council on the Arts.
