This year, we are expanding our programming to include a variety of one hour classes for school-aged children, in a variety of categories. These classes will be in accord with the visual arts standards for the state of Alabama. Each studio in this series will feature a different visual arts activity that engages the kids, while teaching them important skills. This series will be a great opportunity to show how the arts can overlap traditional learning methods. We suggest ages 8 & up attend these crafts, but please let us know the age of your younger child when purchasing your ticket and we can make accommodations. Children under 10 need to be accompanied by an adult. August will feature 6 classes: Session A: Saturday, August 6; 11AM-12 PM Paper weaving: Two crafts in one! Design your paper and learn the basics of weaving. Session B: Saturday, August 6; 1-2 PM Woven Turtles: We will make a cute little turtle friend while learning a yarn weaving technique. Session C: Saturday, August 13; 11AM-12 PM Foosball Box: We will use math and tools from our crafting toolbox to make and play with our own Foosball shoe box. Session D: Saturday August 13; 1-2 PM Button Collage: We will learn the skill of sewing buttons while marketing a beautiful piece of art. Session E: Saturday, August 20; 11AM-12PM Monoprinting: We will get messy making prints while learning about the printmaking skill of monoprinting. Session F: Saturday August 20; 1-2 PM Golden Ratio Painting: We will learn about painter Piet Mondrian and the mathematician Fibonacci then make a piece of art inspired by both. This class will be located in the newly available Studio 2 which is located behind Rusty the big red dog on our campus. Look for the blue double doors in the Courtyard of Wonders! There is a minimum of 3 participants and a maximum of 14 per session. If the minimum is not met, participants will be refunded.  About Molly Nelko: A native of Mobile, AL, Molly Nelko has joined Kentuck’s staff as our Programming Assistant! She attended Springhill College and received a BA in fine art with a focus on oil painting and printmaking. Her work has been in individual exhibitions from Portland, OR to Hilton Head SC, and can be found online. Molly currently lives in Tuscaloosa with her husband, three children, and cat Quill. She has experimented with many different forms of art, and some of her favorites are encaustic, tessellations, and ink wash. Molly currently works in her studio regularly, but her focus has become more about enjoying creative projects with her children.
